West African Dance (CANCELED)

West African Dance encompasses many different dance styles from many different ethnic groups out of western Africa. This workshop will consist of a warm-up utilizing West African dance techniques, then move into exploring a specific dance style, all accompanied by live drumming. All levels are welcome!

Fred’s bio: Drummer, teacher, and drum maker Fred Simpson was drumming his mother’s pots and pans at one-and-a-half years of age. He started drumming professionally at UC-Santa Cruz and in the decades since then has performed, taught, and lectured in New York City, at the Kennedy Center, San Francisco Ethnic Dance, and many more venues.

Deollo’s bio: Dancer, dance teacher, and choreographer Deollo Johnson has been dancing most of his life. He’s done West African dance for decades, performing professionally in many venues and teaching internationally, including at Lake Eden Arts Festival (LEAF) and the Creative Dance Institute in Thailand.
